We look up to them in awe. We scrutinize every aspect of their lives, from the way they dress to the way they act. Whether we like it or not, the five models I talk about below have changed the way we look at the fashion world, each one in her very own way.
Though she more accurately belongs to the 1990s, I couldn’t help but include her in this post, since I consider her to be a true fashion icon. Kate Moss was part of the “Heroin Chic” fashion trend in the 1990s. She became the “anti-supermodel” at that time: With her humble 1m70cm height and tiny frame, she sometimes projected an unhealthy image – pale skin, dark under-eye circles and anorexic silhouette. At the same time, Kate was approachable and inaccessible, susceptible and tough, soft and intense, ultra-feminine and androgynous.
On the heels of Kate Moss, entered Gisele Bündchen, ending the “Heroin Chic” era of modeling. Apart from being the highest paid and perhaps best recognized model of all time, the superb Brazilian model and actress is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program. She has been an activist for many years, endorsing various environmental projects. In addition, Gisele keeps her private life a mystery. For her, family is everything; it’s her priority.
Yes, Natalia Vodianova, is one of the purest models of all times as well as the face of Etam and Calvin Klein. She is, more importantly, a very influential philanthropist. Having risen from complete poverty to wealth, Natalia is the founder of a philanthropic association that helps improve the safety, well-being and environment of underprivileged as well as disabled children.
Agyness Deyn, named of the top 30 models of the 2000s by Vogue Paris, is not your typical model. She is known for constantly undergoing makeovers. She has had her hair blonde, red, black, brown and shaved! She is also a talented designer: Agyness along her younger sister Emily Hollins, created a limited edition range of women’s tunics and tank top T-shirts for Japanese brand Uniqlo.
Now, one of my favorite models: Freja Beha Erichsen, aka “The Queen of Cool.” Thanks to her androgynous look, she has become the muse of Karl Lagerfeld. She makes beauty seem effortless. In fact, Freja never seems to try. A typical Freja outfit will consist of a simple oversized white T-Shirt (no bra), skinny black jeans, a leather biker jacket with zips and heavy boots. You get what I mean!
